Sisters Shauna, Stacey, and Courtney Smith have created some of the cooler costumes we’ve encountered at Phoenix Comicon/Fan Fusion over the years. In 2014, they came as characters from famed Internet cartoon Homestar Runner, including the infamous Strong Bad. The next year, they were members of the Teen Girl Squad, a spin-off of Homestar Runner.

t hasn’t been easy being a girl geek these days. Between gatekeeping, misogyny, and the toxic behavior inherent to the nerd world, it can be difficult for females to get into fandom. That’s where Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activities, a women’s-only social group with chapters around the U.S., comes in. (And, yes, the acronym spells out what you think it does.)

He also dressed up as the character and scrawled “REDRUM” across the door for added effect.

Spend enough time with the writer-comedian — who comes across in person like a dreamy fashion student and goes by the apt handle @spaceprincejulio on Instagram — and it makes sense that he imagines his apartment to be a macabre version of Toy Story in which the dominant decorative objects terrorize the weaker ones. “He feels like he comes from another world,” says Ana Fabrega, a collaborator who, along with Torres and Fred Armisen, co-created the new HBO comedy series Los Espookys, which debuts June 14. “When you see his work, it really does feel like he doesn’t belong here and he’s giving his observations on us.”

The suits themselves consist of button snaps and ribbon loops sewn into a pattern that routes the LED strips around the jacket’s hood and down each arm. To make the lighting effect pop, an all black plastic mask is used to cover the wearer’s face. It wouldn’t be that much a stretch to substitute EL wire in place of the LED strips if one were so inclined. We’d wager a number of you could pull this off straight out of the junkbox.
